Mission Motivation

From "Ancient Story" to today's modern story, parallel examples of job perceptions among employees continues to challenge managers. Dos Caminos is a Mexican-Fusion restaurant that has had a ton of great success in NewYork. Dos Caminos is one of the top profit restaurants in its category. With super strict and intensely developed logistics, Dos Caminos has a large array of employees in each of its branches that ranges from marketers to dishwashers. Each employee has a specific designated job to do that is essential to assure constant and smooth flow.
For example, the marketer at Dos Caminos is responsible for marketing all promotions, holidays, events, holidays, parties, and business media. He is always under a lot of stress since Dos Caminos requires top-notch professional work that must be delivered in the most elegant, chic, moment-trend, cost-effective, and timely manner. One error, or work with little business-dazzle, the marketer can loose his job immediately. Since he is always under constant stress from many angles to meet deadlines, prototypes, advertising methods, media marketing and other aspects; Herzberg hygiene factors seem to outweigh the satisfier factors. Is all the stress worth his salary?
On the other hand, the dishwasher has more of a flexible schedule, less stress, and therefore, he seems to be more contempt with his job. Yes, his wage is low, has no benefits, and can only get so far in the corporate ladder; the dishwasher comes to work from 4 pm to midnight and retires home with no stress to take home. He rests adequately and has time to do activities he enjoys. Our amigo the dishwasher is performing extremely well doing his job. Maslow's Hierarchy of needs might not apply for the dish washer due to many factors like safe working conditions, physical comfort on the job, and other aspects.
In order to influence the motivation level of subordinates, I truly believe that is empirical to know their behaviors, background, current situation, and likes in order to understand them and be able to come up with a system that can be tailored to them that works with the lifestyle. We could use law of effect, which is behavior followed by a pleasant consequence is likely to be repeated. This for example can be tailored to an employee who has a family. Lets say that as a sales representative, this guy is extremely good, but his performance has decreases since he has had family problems lately. What we can do is that the company will provide more flexible hours is he can meet certain sales, the company can also award him with an extra day of if he surpasses projected sales, and the company can also give him an additional three days extra vacation if he exceeds projected sales for at least six months a year. This theory I believe will help the company and also the employee both grow.
As managers in todays ever-changing global economy, we must strive to have workers like the last man in "Ancient Story" who when asked what is it that they are doing, they can all reply "I am helping to build a cathedral." In the end, our world will be full of beautiful cathedrals.
